The Basics of Poker

Before you can place your bets in Poker, you need to know how the game works. The first thing you must do is decide if you want to bet or fold. Folding means not putting any money into the pot. Betting, on the other hand, means putting money into the pot. If you bet, the other players have to call your bet in order to contest the pot. There are many variations of Poker and the rules are different in each.

In addition to rules and strategy, poker also has an interesting history. The word “poke” is slang for card hustlers. The word was used by these criminals to cheat on unsuspecting opponents. It was later added with an “r” to confuse players who did not know slang. While poker may seem like a simple game, there is still a significant element of chance and cheating in it.

The game of Poker is played with chips. When a game has seven or more players, the chips are provided. Each player is dealt a different colored chip: a white chip is the lowest valued and a red chip is worth five whites. Generally, a blue chip is worth ten, twenty, or thirty-five whites. The players “buy-in” by purchasing chips. Then they are all given the same amount of chips.
