A slot is a broad flat wood bar or slat that can be used for receiving something or sliding into a container. The term slot is often used to describe a player’s scoring zone. The goaltender’s position is critical because a player must be able to react quickly to a puck if he or she wants to score. However, a slot in a hockey rink can refer to two different places on the ice. The low slot is the area directly in front of the goaltender and between the faceoff circles, while the high slot is the area in the middle of the ice above these circles.
