Impact of Global Warming on Natural Disasters

Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth due to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which has the potential to cause various significant impacts on the environment and human life. One of the major implications of global warming is an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters. One of the natural disasters most affected by global warming is flooding. Rising earth temperatures cause melting of polar ice and rising sea levels. According to the IPCC report, if global temperatures rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius, many coastal areas will be threatened by tidal floods. In Indonesia, areas such as Jakarta and Semarang are already starting to experience this impact, with flooding becoming more frequent. Apart from flooding, global warming also contributes to an increase in extreme weather, including drought. Changes in rainfall patterns and faster evaporation of water due to high temperatures have reduced water availability in many areas. For example, East Nusa Tenggara often experiences prolonged drought, which has an impact on food security and public health. Global warming also plays a role in increasing the frequency and strength of tropical storms. Warmer seas provide extra energy for storms, causing them to become more powerful and destructive. For countries like the Philippines and Indonesia, this storm not only brought major damage but also had an impact on the economy and people’s daily lives. The occurrence of forest fires can also be linked to global warming. Higher temperatures and erratic rainfall create more flammable conditions. Fires in Australia and Indonesia, often caused by human activity, are becoming more severe due to climate change, destroying ecosystems and harming public health due to smoke pollution. Meanwhile, in the context of earthquakes, although global warming does not directly cause earthquakes, climate shifts can trigger geological activity, including the possibility of increasing pressure on the earth’s plates. This relationship is still a topic of research, but the impact of fractions such as the redistribution of ice mass at the poles has been proven to have the potential to influence earthquake activity. Climate change not only impacts the current situation, but will also create new challenges in the future. Sectors such as agriculture, fisheries and health will face difficulties. Adaptation needs to be taken seriously, starting from building disaster-resistant infrastructure to improving water resource management systems. A global commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an important step to reduce the rate of global warming and, in turn, reduce the impact of natural disasters around the world.
