The Basics of Poker

In a poker game, each player has a fixed starting position and a dedicated dealer. A dealer cuts, shuffles and deals the cards to the players one at a time. The cards may be dealt face up or face down, depending on the poker variant. As the game progresses, the players develop poker hands.

The aim of the game is to create the best possible hand using all the available cards. If a player reaches this goal, he or she wins the pot. Each player must then place a certain number of chips into the pot, equal to the total contribution of all players before him. This player is known as an active player. The next player to place his chips in the pot has an advantage over the other players.

The game of poker has been around for centuries. It was first played by the Germans in the sixteenth century. Later, in the 1850s, the game was adopted by French settlers in New Orleans.
