The Basics of Poker

Poker

The game of poker originated as a popular way to cheat on unsuspecting opponents. Its name is likely derived from card hustlers’ slang term, “poke,” which he used to deceive other players. The word was added to the game in order to confuse players who understood the slang. Despite its seedy origins, the game has remained an exciting and rewarding pastime for many players.

In order to win in a game of poker, each player must bet an ante before the first hand is dealt. The ante is a pre-determined amount of money that goes into the pot. An all-in bet places all of a player’s chips into the pot, and each round follows. The aim is to make the highest possible hand in a short period of time. The goal of the game is to win more chips than your opponents.

In poker, the players may have to contribute to the pot before the game begins. This is known as the ante. A player with a high card is said to bet. If no one has bet yet, the player is said to bet. A player who has made a bet, but is lower, is considered to have “tie” in the game. The other players can make bets, but aren’t necessarily required to do so.
