Flooding in Pakistan is an increasingly salient issue, especially in the context of global climate change. Every year, the monsoon season brings heavy rains that trigger floods, but their frequency and intensity is increasing. In recent years, Pakistan has experienced major floods that have resulted in significant economic losses, affecting the lives of millions of people. Climate change has an important role in this phenomenon. Global warming makes weather patterns more erratic, causing extreme rainfall. Climate models show that developing countries like Pakistan will experience more extreme weather, including high temperatures and unpredictable rainfall. Floods in Pakistan not only cause material losses, but also long-term impacts on agriculture, health and infrastructure. More than 30 million people were directly affected by the flooding, resulting in loss of shelter and access to basic services. The agricultural sector, which is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, has also suffered heavy losses. Crops such as wheat, rice and cotton were destroyed, undermining food security. Therefore, mitigation and adaptation efforts to climate change are very urgent. Global action is also important in addressing this issue. The conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides a platform for countries to collaborate. Developed countries have a responsibility to help developing countries adapt. Funding for projects that focus on reducing the adverse impacts of climate change is urgently needed. In addition, green technology can be a solution to reduce the impact of climate change in Pakistan. The use of renewable energy and sustainable agricultural systems will help the country adapt to unpredictable weather changes. Flood-resistant infrastructure, such as better drainage channels and water storage systems, is also needed to reduce the impact of future flooding. The involvement of local communities in planning and implementing adaptation projects is no less important. Education about climate change and ways to mitigate it are very necessary so that people can be better prepared to face disasters. Community participation can strengthen community resilience to future disasters. The Government of Pakistan, together with international organizations, should continue to work to implement policies that strengthen adaptive capacity. This includes investment in research and development of mitigation technologies. Using an ecosystem-based approach can also help restore and protect natural resources. With the right steps and international collaboration, Pakistan can be helped to face the increasingly serious flood challenges caused by climate change. Success in preventing flooding is not only a local responsibility, but is also part of the global responsibility to keep this planet livable.
