How to Configure and Use Slots in HTML5

A slot is a narrow opening or groove in something. For example, the mail slots in a post office or a slot in a machine where you place coins to make it work. A slot is also a time or place where an activity can take place. You can also use the word to describe a job or position, such as the chief copy editor’s slot at a newspaper.

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content (passive slot) or calls out for it using a targeter (active slot). Slots work in conjunction with scenarios and renderers to deliver content to the page. It’s generally not recommended to feed a single scenario into more than one slot, as doing so can lead to unpredictable results.
