What is a Slot?

Slot

The term slot was first used to describe a hollow at the base of the throat, just above the breastbone. The word has many meanings, from a hollowed tree to a slot in a piece of furniture. The word has also been used to refer to a deer track, since a bloodhound will follow the slot left by a wounded deer. The word has been a synonym for the term slot machine since the 1880s.

The term slot is derived from the French “slotée”, which means “a cut or cavity made with slots.” It later gained the meaning “drop a coin in,” and “take a position in” in the 1940s. It has also come to be used to refer to the area between faceoff circles. In hockey, the demo slot can also refer to a scoring area. The slot is usually made of ice, so the goaltender is at the center of the rink.

As the slot machine’s symbols grew in number, the game also gained features. Many video slots feature a video image instead of spinning reels. The lack of spinning reels in the video version drew disapproval from many players. Since the video versions of slot machines have no effect on the outcome of the game, manufacturers incorporated handles and reels in order to give the illusion of control. A video slot can also be a high-tech machine.
